Are you often overwhelmed by thoughts about the future? Do you worry about things you cannot influence? Excessive worrying can take away the joy of life and cause chronic stress. If you feel that your thoughts keep circling around problems, this article will help you find calm. You will learn how to effectively reduce anxiety, focus on the present and live more mindfully.
Why do we worry?
Worrying is a natural defence mechanism of our brain, meant to protect us from potential danger. The problem appears when, instead of helping, it begins to overwhelm us. The most common reasons for excessive worrying are:
- Fear of the unknown – difficulty accepting uncertainty,
- Analysing the past – dwelling on mistakes and decisions,
- Worries about the future – health, finances, relationships,
- Perfectionism – a need for complete control over everything.
How to stop worrying
1. Reframe your thinking
- Ask yourself: Is what I’m worried about really going to happen?
- Focus on facts rather than on imagined scenarios – we often worry about things that never happen.
- Think about whether this situation will still matter in a week, a month or a year.
2. Live in the here and now
- Practise mindfulness – being consciously present in the moment reduces stress.
- Set aside “worry time” – if intrusive thoughts appear, write them down and come back to them later.
- Use breathing techniques, such as deep diaphragmatic breathing, which calms the nervous system.
3. Focus on action instead of worries
- If you can influence the problem, work out an action plan and take the first step.
- If you have no control over the situation, focus on what you can do here and now.
4. Limit sources of stress
- Avoid following negative news too closely, as it can increase anxiety.
- Make sure you surround yourself with people who support you and lift your spirits.
- Find inspiration in positive content – books, music and nature help you regain harmony.
5. Practise gratitude and a positive attitude
- Write down three things you are grateful for every day.
- Focusing on the positive aspects of life changes your perspective and reduces the tendency to worry.
6. Take care of your body and mind
- Regular physical activity reduces cortisol levels and improves mood.
- A healthy diet supports the nervous system – cut down on caffeine and sugar and eat more healthy fats.
- Maintain good sleep hygiene – lack of sleep can intensify negative thoughts and feelings of anxiety.
7. Seek support
- Talking to loved ones can help you gain a different perspective.
- If worrying affects your daily life, it is worth seeking help from a psychologist.
- ACT (Acceptance and Commitment Therapy) helps you accept difficult thoughts and focus on action.
Summary
Excessive worrying does not have to rule your life. By changing the way you think, practising mindfulness and taking care of healthy habits, you can regain your inner peace.
You do not have to be in control of everything – sometimes it is enough to trust that everything will work out.
